Today...was a day. In my (albeit late) raised bed cleanup, I came across an evil root intruder: The Oriental Bittersweet. Now, while I knew this plant grew in the backyard, I had NO IDEA the crazy root systems it develops. Well, I learned the hard way. My raised bed and all it's nutrient goodness had become a perfect environment for this invasive plant to thrive, unknowingly at that, because there were ZERO bittersweet vines actually surfaced in the bed itself.
I spent the entire day digging and ripping and cutting out the sub-surfaced root system in preparation for putting down root-blocking garden fabric, a project for next weekend.
At least maybe this explains my not too terribly successful growing season this year. We'll see.
